Transient Spaces
Well, trains being on my mind has got me thinking about transient spaces, so it's only a matter of time that I write an article on them. They're such an interesting concept--not just trains, but even the common lift--are curious. A friend of mine once went inside one, closed the door, and waited for someone else to call it. The lights shut off after a while to conserve power, apparently, which I wasn't aware of. I'm rather tempted to try it myself. It's a deliberate choice to linger in a space that's meant to passively carry someone from one place to another.
There's also the experiences of trains, trams, and the like. For those, I find them interesting as transient spaces with layers. It's not only about the world you're passing through and viewing, it's also the world of the vehicle you're in. Trains can be long enough with varied enough scenery that you can take a real journey.
Surprisingly, though, I don't exactly get the same feeling of cars being a transient space. Maybe it's because one typically has to drive a car themselves--but at the same time, that's not always true. And that quality also applies to vans and trailers which I do consider to be transient spaces, so who knows. It's hard to nail down true definitions for some things. And that's not even coming down to things such as ships and air planes. It might even be personal bias, as I tend to prefer the driving of cars not as a means to get somewhere, but as a way of searching for things.
Regardless, the concept of transient spaces is fascinating to me.
